The Dark Poet Ink Slab & Container is a modest and very practical slab to both grind and contain ink. Ink sticks are ground into ink slabs, and the resulting powder is mixed with water to produce the ink. Even though liquid ink has been available for Chinese art since the mid-1800s, many artists still prefer to grind their own ink not only because of the traditional element, but also because of the control it provides over the consistency of the ink.

Because of its versatility, the Dark Poet -Premium Brush Painting Ink Slab and Container also makes a great place to store the stones used for Chinese chess. This slab will look great in your studio, and also makes a great gift for your favorite artist!

The stone used to make this slab is handpicked from the Kunlun Mountain. It is cool and smooth and a great pleasing tool to have in the study room.

Ink slabs have long been known as one of the Four Treasures of the Study, which is the term given to the four tools seen as essential to a Chinese artist. The other three are brushes, paper and ink sticks. The term originated around the time of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589 A.D.), and ink slabs and ink sticks have been used for at least 2,000 years.
