As its name suggests, the Fineline Specialist is particularly suited for drawing and painting fine lines. This makes this paper perfect for Gongbi painting.

The paper is a single-ply processed paper, meaning it is not absorbent at all, which is what makes it great for fineline painting. A paper becomes processed by undergoing an additional step after the normal manufacturing process for unprocessed Xuan paper.

The additional step consists of spreading the chemical substance alum on the paper to decrease the absorbency of the paper. Since this paper is processed (as opposed to semi-processed) a large amount of alum is applied to take away all absorbency. In addition to Fineline (Gongbi) Painting, this paper also can be used for calligraphy and Encaustics, which uses hot beeswax with added color pigment instead of ink.
