Ink sticks are the traditional method of producing ink by Chinese artists. Ink sticks are ground against an ink slab to produce a powder, and then water is mixed in with the powder to produce the ink. Even though liquid ink appeared in the mid-19th Century, many artists still like to use ink sticks because they can control the consistency of the ink created.
While glossy ink sticks are made of oil soot, the Pine Soot Ink Stick is produced from the soot of burned pine. This ink produces a black that is matte and is often used as the as items in paintings and calligraphy that are not the main subject of the work. This does not allow them to take attention away from the glossier, more important aspects.
Throughout their long history, which stretches back over thousands of years, ink sticks have become known as artworks themselves. The Pine Soot Ink Stick has carvings on both sides of it, and will make a great decoration for your studio as well as great ink.
