Handmade Red Star Shuen Paper is considered to be of the highest paper quality and comes from the famous Hong Xing paper mill in Jingxian in Chinas Anhui province. It is a superb quality expert paper for experienced artists requiring outstanding characteristics of their paper.

Red Star Mulberry Shuen Paper for Sumi & Chinese/Japanese Calligraphy
Paper material: Shuen Paper
Hong Xing, or Red Star, is widely considered to be the most famous Xuan paper manufacturer in China. Therefore, any paper produced by Red Star is considered to be some of the highest quality paper available.
The Mulberry Xuan Paper, as its name suggests, is made primarily of the bark from the Mulberry tree. This paper has a rougher texture than more traditional Xuan paper, which is often made from bark of the Qingtan Tree (Pteroceltis tatarinowii). This unique consistency makes the paper more tenacious and resilient than standard Xuan Paper.
>> NOTE:This Mulberry Shuen Paper also contains Qingtan tree bark like other Xuan papers, just the mulberry fiber percentage is higher, thus affecting the paper characteristics and distinguishing it from classic Red Star Shuen paper such as the "Original Red Star “ Unprocessed Single Xuan Paper"
Unprocessed and unsized, the paper is a single-ply Xuan paper, giving it an absorbent quality best suited for calligraphy and Sumi-e painting.
With its coarse fibers, both types of art will take on a unique effect compared to working with regular Xuan paper. Calligraphy written on the Mulberry Xuan Paper will take on a powerful and interesting character derived from the roughness of the paper. This paper also can be used to experiment with other types of artwork. Do not be afraid to try any form of painting or writing on this unique surface - you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.
Additionally, the paper also serves as a great platform for Encaustics. This art form is produced using hot beeswax that has color pigment added to it. Unlike Sumi-e or Fineline Painting, Encaustics excels on thin paper, and the thinner the paper is, the more luminescent the final artwork will be. Though Encaustics has been in existence since the early part of the last millennium, it has seen a particular resurgence in the past two decades.
Though this is not your run of the mill paper, the Mulberry Xuan Paper is a great addition to your artistic repertoire, and will allow you to produce inimitable and charismatic work that is not possible on more standard paper types.
