As its name suggests, Shorty the Badger is made of badger hair. A member of the hard hair brush family, badger hair is even harder than weasel hair, which itself is often mistaken for the also rigid wolf hair.

Because of the stiffness of the brush, it is great for calligraphy, especially Cao Shu and Xing Shu scripts. But it can also be used in painting, and is particularly adept at drawing fine lines.

Another notable aspect of the brush is its extra long tip, which makes it ideal for producing clear and accurate work when writing at high speeds. Though not the perfect brush for every art project, Shorty the Badger is a specialty brush that can handle any of the above tasks with great precision.

Carved into the wooden handle are the characters Chang Feng Shi Huan Shu Hua, the name of the brush in Chinese.
