THE BEAR KING - Chinese Calligraphy & Sumi Brush - 2.8 inch Black Tip

A pleasantly looking brush in the optic of traditional bear hair brushes but actually made of goat hair. The tip of this brush consists of two types of bristles - both from the goat. The outer bristles are of normal goat hair which has the known characteristics of high ink absorbency whereas the inner bristles are made of the hair of goat beard which has a far higher resilience giving strength to the tip and making it a brush with characteristics of a high quality mixed hair or combination brush.
The comparable characteristics of the goat-beard hair bristles with bear hair bristles is the reason this brush is referred to as "Bear King" in China. Read more in the detail explanation. The Bear King is suitable for large tip calligraphy writing and sumi painting.

Despite its probably confusing name, The Bear King is a brush made completely out of goat hair. Its Chinese name is the "Bear King" though which is why we directly translated it into English.

To emulate the bear hair brush look, the goat hair has been died in black which also lends this brush its name. If you are looking for a 100% bear hair brush, please browse our collector's brushes and search for a brush like "Tangun's Bear".

The brush itself has a distinguishing look that starts with a light color and fades nearly to black at the tip.

A hard hair brush, the tip of the Bear King is resilient and elastic, while still keeping a sturdy structure. These qualities make the brush excellent for calligraphy, which is how it is often used, though it can be used for painting, as well. It particularly excels when used to write Cao Shu and Xing Shu scripts.
