Chinese & Japanese Ink Stick Set in 7 Colors for Sumi & Calligraphy
Dimension: 3.1 in x 0.7 in x 0.3 in / 7.8 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.8 cm
Ink sticks are known as one of the Four Treasures of the Study of Chinese art, along with brushes, paper and ink slabs. Each of these tools was thought to represent the indispensable tools required by every Chinese artist. Evidence of the use of ink sticks in China date back at least 2,000 years.
The grinding of ink sticks has become an art form in and of itself, and requires a specific process. First, the ink stick is ground against an ink slab until it takes the form of a powder. Next, water is added to the powder to turn it into a liquid ink. The great advantage of grinding your own ink sticks is that it gives you the power to control how thick or watery your ink is which you may want to vary depending on your specific project.
An additional traditional aspect of ink sticks is that they were designed to be beautiful themselves. The Flying Dragon Color Set of Seven Colors achieves this by including a flying dragon printed on the side of each stick. On the other side are three Chinese characters that translate as "colorful Ink Sticks."
The colored ink sticks we carry are among the best quality colored ink sticks that can be found.
Still, their ink cannot match the ink produced from high-quality darker ink sticks which is created by grinding the stick on an ink slab. The reason for this is that the darker ink sticks are the traditional ink sticks with ingredients developed perfectly over the centuries whereas colored ink sticks are more recent to add more variety to sumi and Chinese brush painting.
For this reason, please do not expect the colored ink sticks to work the same way as your traditional dark premium ink sticks; the only colored ink stick which can rival ink created from darker premium ink sticks is the "Golden Dragon".
However, the colorful ink sticks make a great addition to your toolkit and are of very good quality “ provided, one does not expect them to do what a Can Pei Shi can do. Therefore, we mostly recommend our colored ink sticks for art projects and color effects on a sumi painting as an alternative to Marie's Colors.
